Highmore: The highest point between Chicago and the Missouri River
Highmore, is located at the cross roads of Hwy 14 & 47 – the gateway to the Missouri River. Highmore, settled in 1882, is the highest point between Chicago and the Missouri River.
Highmore is primarily an agricultural community and a thriving town with a well balanced business district, a volunteer fire department, a growing school system, a nursing home, a clinic, seven churches and income based housing. Recreation includes a library, an outdoor community swimming pool, a golf course, two parks, fishing and hunting.
Hyde County is unique in that it contains only one town, Highmore, the county seat, which is also home to the largest wind tower project in South Dakota with 27 towers, located 10 miles south of town.
Heartland State Bank sits on the former site of the Franklin Hotel, a local landmark for many years. (The Franklin Hotel has a history of its own, having been used as a courthouse and school, prior to being remodeled for use as a hotel, many years before 1963.)
